ABOUT OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Our children age 3 through Grade 6 begin their Sunday morning experience in the sanctuary with a brief opening before they go to their separate classes. In Third Grade, our students are presented with Good News Bibles.
Around the Fourth Grade, after instructional classes and a desire and readiness by both students and parents, our young people receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion for the first time. This is celebrated on Palm Sunday.
Our Confirmation program is a two‑year course for our 7th and 8th graders, taught by our pastor on Sunday after worship, usually two times per month. Guidelines for the program are explained to parents and students before the onset of confirmation instruction. Our youth are confirmed in the Eighth Grade on Pentecost Sunday (May or June). Regular class, Sunday School, and worship attendance is expected of our confirmands, as well as serving as a reader, acolyte or crucifer during worship.
Zion offers an adult class every Sunday morning during the educational hour.
In the summer we sponsor a one-week Vacation Bible School Program, Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The week ends with a Thursday night bonfire and cookout. Volunteers are always needed for this exciting week in the life of our church!
ABOUT OUR SOCIAL LIFE AND OTHER CHURCH PROGRAMS . . .
WELCA (Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America): The Edith Reed Circle meets on the third Wednesday of the month from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., for Bible study, business and lunch. The women sponsor various programs and projects at Zion such as the Mother/Daughter Banquet, Congregational Meeting Luncheon, Community Clothing Service, Meals on Wheels Desserts, Funeral Luncheons, etc.
CHOIR: under the direction of Rosemarie Zebell, practices Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. The choir leads the congregation in weekly worship. During July and August, the choir takes a rest, and special music is offered by members and guest musicians.
OTHER MUSICAL GROUPS:
Ensemble - Zion's instrumentalists practice throughout the year at various times to provide music for special services.
Chime Choir - Like hand bells, but different, this group gathers at various times throughout the year to provide music on special occasions.
FUN AND FELLOWSHIP FOR THE FAITHFUL: Several times throughout the year we gather for a time of fellowship. We also hold coffee hour each Sunday after church to welcome new members, honor our graduates, celebrate Confirmation and First Communion, or just to have fellowship.
SOFTBALL TEAM: Zion, along with English Lutheran Church in Zelienople and Stone Church, sponsors a softball team that competes with other area church teams. During the late spring and early summer months, we have weekly practices and games scheduled at Bauder Field, Burry’s Field, or at Lutherlyn.
PRAYER CHAIN: Zion has a prayer chain that is activated by calling the church office or pastor with a prayer request. If you have a prayer request or wish to be part of the chain, please call the church office.
OUR GOVERNANCE . . .
The Church Council is elected by the congregation to govern the church. Members are elected for a 2‑year term. Our Council consists of 10 members, including the pastor. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month beginning at 7:00 p.m. Our Council meetings are presided over by the Congregational President.
Zion has two regular congregational meetings each year. At our November meeting new council members, deacons and a treasurer are elected. Our budget for the following year is approved. The annual reports of various committees and groups of Zion are presented at the January meeting.
Zion Evangelical Church operates under the guidance of the church's constitution that was approved at our November 2008 Congregational Meeting.
